You know, Skrillex… that guy from LA that does those electro remixes that make you jump and stuff… Forget that. Prepare yourself for a labour of love placed into cutting up La Roux’s vocals and then labour of hate and pain placed into the sonic experience that transcends after. Dubstep fans: this remix will have the name of Skrillex etched into your mind forever.

“Here With Me” is Jakwob‘s first release on his label Boom Ting Recordings. The single is to be released on the 13th September and the official video for it landed yesterday.

It’s  been a minute since I last featured dubstep eccentric High Rankin on these pages but I can confirm that he’s well and truly alive. In fact, he’s been working ruddy hard and here are some of the fruits of this elbow greasing. In this remix of Urchin’s “Dragana“, he ringfences the vocals and smashes the bassline with a sledgehammer to create the legendary Rankin sound. In true High Rankin style, you can’t help but think that the end of the world is nigh once you press play…

So if you are madly, truly, deeply in love with this tune, you’ll have to wait until the 6th September when it is released on Kissy Sellout’s San City Records imprint.

Urchins – Dragana (High Rankin Remix) by High Rankin

Dubstep has really dropped off my radar in the past couple of months. I’m finding the whole scene over-saturated with new producers, songs and remixes, and I’m finding that it’s only those artists that brought the music to the fore nearly 5 years ago are the only artists that are pushing the scene forward and generating new sounds.

Nevertheless, I am feeling this remix of Kano‘s new single “Upside” by Bar9. The single itself features Michelle Breeze and is due for release on August 22nd. This remix sees Bar9 focus more on Breeze’s vocals than Kano’s own additions to the track. The remix will be included in the single package, which also includes the most under-rated track of the summer “Get Wild“, the Redlight remix of “Get Wild” and the “Upside” music video.

Roughly 24 hours ago, Mary Anne Hobbs presented nocturnal listeners with a 45 minute special guest mix from the man of the moment, Skream. Entitled “The Future Sound of Skreamix”, it is packed full of exclusives and unreleased Skream tunes, making the Freeizms seem a little less special! Grab the mix and tracklisting below!

This track has been doing plenty of rounds on the radio, and it has been very much the tune for a summer that never was. We saw more cloud and rain than sunshine and blue skies. The single is out the 16th August.

The video was directed by Mo Ali.

On a personal level, I find it particularly difficult to review albums. I find it very easy to review a song, and quite easy to review an EP but when it comes to reviewing an entire album, I find myself fighting my own attention span. It often takes several stops and restarts before I can get into the album and make it all the way to the end – by which time I find myself more relieved than not.

However, when Skream’s sophomore album Outside The Box landed on my doormat this morning, my disorientated mind fighting through the hazy glow of the light through the curtains told me that this needed my opinion. This is probably because the album has become more and more important to me, even before it was released. I can go on and on about dubstep and how I worry for its future, and I feel that I am placing my trust back in the godfathers of the genre to reinvigorate it. One of those godfathers, of course, is Skream and the sounds we’ve been hearing from him have been so encouraging that they actually instil some hope for the future of the genre.

It’s been a minute since I posted Part 1 of Rusko‘s The Lost Dubs series. But now he’s awaken and uploaded Part 2 for you lot to enjoy. If you remember, Part 1 was very much from Rusko’s early days, taking you back to 2004. We’ve moved on a bit here with tracks that you may find more recognisable, and a sound more refined to the previous package.

The five tracks are zipped up below for you to take away, and I believe there are still a few more of these to come out from Rusko but don’t get too hungry!
